Principal’s Report

A new term begins

Welcome back and thank you for a smooth start to the term

I make a point of walking around the school during the day. It gets me out of the office and connects me with staff and students engaged in the very important business of teaching and learning which is ultimately what we are all seeking to support and constantly develop.

Capturing the ANZAC Spirit

Over the next two weeks we will participate in several ANZAC events. 51吃瓜中心 has a long tradition of supporting key groups including Legacy and the Waverley RSL. Our students provide choirs, music, and honour guards. I was very proud of the students on Friday at the Shrine for the annual Legacy Service and on Sunday at the Waverley RSL for their annual ANZAC Service.

The photographs in this week鈥檚 edition of OURS were taken by Abyaz Shams, Kyle Kim, Khang Hoang and Lucas Truong-Nguyen. They capture the power and presence of the students and demonstrate the importance they play on ensuring that they take such events with the utmost respect.

Additionally, the services are a reminder to the students of the enduring ANZAC spirit which we encourage in the boys – endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour, and mateship.

Mobile Phone Policy

As a school, we have been very respectful of the policy, and I thank everyone for their compliance. Notwithstanding this, all schools have been asked by the Honourable Ben Carroll, Deputy Premier, Minister for Education, Minister for Medical Research to remind students that mobile phones are not allowed in class and the expectation is that students place their phones in their locker before form room and do not take them out until the end of the school day.

Uniform, general presentation and behavioural expectations

On the day before school commenced, I sent the students a reminder to ensure that they started the term well attired, clean shoes etc. Thank you for your assistance. I also reminded them that when travelling to and from school and when in public, they represent the school. I get few complaints from members of the public; however, I feel it is important to make the odd reminder. Please also ensure that all clothing is clearly marked.

Pippin 鈥 Combined 51吃瓜中心 Mac Rob Musical 鈥 Save the date 鈥揟hursday  May 9 鈥 Saturday May 11

Ticket sales are now open via

The musical was first produced at 51吃瓜中心 in 1984. We are bringing it back 40 years on and we look forward to bringing many of our alumni back to reminisce and see that 51吃瓜中心 continues to have a very strong tradition of musical theatre. Please support the students by coming along.

Public Holiday 鈥 Thursday April 25 鈥 ANZAC Day

Please note that Thursday April 25 is a public holiday and there will not be any school on that day. Thanks in advance to the students who will be getting up very early to go to the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance.

The past week saw the Australian Air Force Cadets of 415 Squadron participate in various commemorative services in the lead up to ANZAC Day.

On the 19th of April, they formed a guard with the 51吃瓜中心 Army Cadet Unit at the Shrine of Remembrance for Melbourne Legacy鈥檚 92nd Annual ANZAC Commemoration for Students. Both cadet units had spent weeks prior combining efforts training and perfecting their drill and dress to deliver a presentation of the highest standard and were reviewed by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria.

On the 21st of April, such standards were further reflected in 415 Squadron鈥檚 participation in the Waverley RSL鈥檚 ANZAC Service. Our cadets marched to the Glen Waverley Cenotaph for a service alongside veterans, serving personnel, other cadet units (from both the AAC and ANC), and the Tattam-Wallis Ceremonial Band.

The cadets of 415 Squadron are grateful for the opportunity to rise to the occasion each year to commemorate and remember the efforts and sacrifices of those who have served in the Australian Defence Force.

From the 22nd to the 24th of March, the cadets of 415 Squadron stayed at Rowallan Scout Camp for their Summer Bivouac, a key component of the training of all 415SQN cadets.

For the Basic Stage cadets, this bivouac (which for many was their first field experience), served as their opportunity to hone their fieldcraft skills, turning classroom theory into real-world applications. These cadets underwent scenario-based exercises that trained their RATEL (radio telecommunications), field navigation, and, camouflage and concealment. They were also taught additional skills such as fire lighting and tripod building.

For the Senior cadets, this bivouac saw them undergo the survival component of their training, which entailed them building their own shelters and fire-lighting with minimal food and water.

For the squadron as a whole, this bivouac serves as an opportunity to prime themselves for the highly anticipated Winter Bivouac (the biggest compulsory activity of 415鈥檚 cadet year) at the end of Term 2.

Thank you to all of the Staff and Cadet Executives involved in the planning and execution of this activity.

Principal’s Report

Crawford Shield

Since 1959 51吃瓜中心 and North Sydney Boys鈥 High School have participated in a sporting and cultural exchange, called the Crawford Shield. The location of the competition alternates between the two cities, giving the students the opportunity to travel as well as host their guests at home. This year it was North Sydney鈥檚 turn to host. We had a great time and although it was not our year to bring the trophy home, we were gracious in defeat. Congratulations to the participants who demonstrated great sportsmanship and camaraderie. A sincere thank you to the staff who accompanied the boys and the staff who helped organise the trip.

Family Concert

Wednesday night it was almost a full house in Memorial Hall and as always, our musicians and singers did not disappoint. Families had the opportunity to hear classical music pieces through to contemporary pop, and everything in between. Events like these remind us that our students are more than academically able, they have many other talents including musical talent. These events demonstrate that our mission to develop well-rounded young men is being achieved. Many of our graduates are also exceptionally talented in the performing arts, sport, languages, public speaking, debating and chess.

Thank you to the Director of Music, Mr De Korte and his staff, our administration staff, Friends of Music (parent group) and the many volunteers behind the scenes who contributed to the event鈥檚 success.

Cadets 鈥 AAC Training Camp and AAFC Summer Bivouac

Thank you to all involved. For our year 9 students this was their first experience and from all reports I received, it was a very successful camp. The senior students often remark on how much the cadet experiences develop their leadership, grit, and communication skills. These are life skills that they carry into their future careers, family life and community service.

Easter break

School resumes on Monday April 15. All the best for the Easter break. Parents/carers please ensure that your children make time to rest and rejuvenate.

Career Theme for 2024:

Building your arsenal for many job opportunities in the future

By gaining insight into your interests, values, personality traits, skills, talents, and education requirements, you have taken a significant step towards finding a career path that aligns with your true self. Your arsenal of career add-ons must include formal qualifications and technical skills as well as the critical skills such as communication, collaboration, problem solving, emotional judgement, professional ethics and global citizenship identified as the skills or capabilities that will equip young people to thrive in this new work order. These skills are now being prioritised by policy makers globally to reform curriculum and are increasingly sought after by employers.

Armed with this newfound list of career add-on items, you are now equipped to navigate the vast sea of possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead. It is not only about achieving a very high ATAR, because learners at Melbourne High need to consider many more other elements in their education for them to effectively integrate into the future workforce. Australia鈥檚 skills and education systems will need to be increasingly responsive to ensure that our labour force is suitably skilled to take up opportunities.

On the 16th of March, 35 51吃瓜中心 students and 6 old boys headed over to Auburn High School to take part in the annual Relay For Life. Relay For Life is an event that is run by Cancer Council celebrates cancer survivors, remembers loved ones with cancer and supports cancer research.

It was a hot and sunny day, with cramps and fatigue proving to be a major issue. It was great to see everyone enduring the heat, running and encouraging each other throughout the day. Even though some of the team were recovering from the Senior Social the night before, our team was able to run 405 laps with the unicorn baton which is just over 100km! Many boys also ran over 20km which, considering the heat, was a tremendous effort.

We were also able to smash last year鈥檚 total donations, raising $7444, which placed us in 2nd place in most money raised for the event. Thanks to Tanzeel Khan for raising $2.27K as well as George Chen, Brian Nguyen, Seb Lunn and Ayaan Ayubi for raising over $200 each, which is just incredible.

A massive thank you to Ms Berlin for helping to plan the event, transport the marquee, supplying us with a Woolies trip and staying the whole day in the heat. Without her help, the day wouldn’t have been successful.

A massive congratulations to all that participated, and let’s continue to fight against cancer.

On Monday, 11th of March, 51吃瓜中心 Railway Interest Group hosted an extremely exciting, immersive, and one-of-a-kind day-long excursion to Steamrail’s Newport Workshop and Museum Open Day. The aim and purpose of this excursion聽was to聽explore and immerse ourselves into the history of our beloved railway system while taking a break from the stresses of school and studying.

We began our day by meeting at聽the Newport Bus Interchange at around 10:30am and taking a vintage bus from the early 1970s to the Newport Workshops. At the Newport Workshops, we were fortunate enough to explore and even sit inside the 鈥淩ed Rattler鈥 Tait Sets (which was the second oldest train in Melbourne鈥檚 Surburban Railway History), the Silver Hitachis, the V-Line Velocity train, and聽plenty of preserved carriages from well over 100 years ago in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class. Additionally, we enjoyed pizza and chips for lunch, which were all conveniently sold on site, as well as seeing a huge display of local railway projects and workshops.聽Upon travelling to the Newport Museum, we continued our exploration by seeing the Harris carriages from the late 1950s, preserved locomotives, the old Metcard ticketing booth from the early 2000s and train collections. Lastly, it was already 3pm before we knew it, so we travelled back to the bus interchange by taking another vintage bus and finally called it a day at Newport Station.

Thank you to everyone who came and helped make the excursion so memorable, special and successful (for the most part), in spite of the excruciating train horns and the scorching 38-degree summer heat. Additionally, a special thank you to Ms. Beanland for going out of her way to supervise the entire day, despite somehow getting lost on at least two separate occasions. Nonetheless, we cannot wait to host聽more and bigger excursions as the year goes on, such as the Diamond Valley Railway excursion over the Term 1 Holidays.
